Watershed Assessments

NHI performs complete assessments of the restoration possibilities for entire watersheds, including appraisal of current watershed conditions as well as future threats to and constraints on the system. We identify management strategies that will provide ecological benefits, improve water quality, and restore biodiversity. NHI conducts original fieldwork, investigations into historical ecology, GIS analysis, and expert interviews to assess watershed conditions and future trajectories, and seeks strategic and efficient opportunities for improved management. NHI’s watershed assessment work falls roughly into three categories:

  • Riparian corridor analysis: The riparian corridor exhibits the most identifiable responses to changes in the watershed. NHI surveys stream channels and floodplains, vegetation, sediment, and other features to characterize baseline conditions. We examine the existing landscape and investigate historical conditions to identify changes in rates and patterns of stream channel form over time.
  • Holistic watershed assessments: To complement the riparian corridor analysis, NHI assesses watershed conditions. NHI conducts extensive analysis of existing hydrology and alterations to the hydrograph resulting from changes in the watershed. We examine existing vegetation cover and habitat availability in the watershed, historical changes to habitats, and future trajectories of watershed land use.
  • Watershed and regional strategies for restoration of biodiversity: NHI identifies the role of the watershed in the conservation of biodiversity by investigating migration corridors of key species, evaluating regional habitat patterns, and assessing availability of regional open space and protected lands.

We complement these three general areas of assessment on a case-by-case basis with additional analysis provided by NHI or specialized consultants. In all our watershed restoration assessment work, we recommend strategic and effective management strategies.
