Low Impact Hydropower Institute

In 2001, NHI, American Rivers, and other conservation groups founded the Low Impact Hydropower Institute.  LIHI certifies hydropower projects whose protection of environmental quality exceeds regulatory requirements.  Consumers may use the certifications (as well as companion certifications for wind, solar, and biomass offered by Green-e) to select renewable sources as their electricity supply, rather than the average mix of generation sources offered by the local utility.  LIHI has certified more than 1,500 megawatts of power generation throughout the nation.  It is the only such certification program.
