Arid Lands Management

There is a growing understanding that the rapid destruction of drylands around the world threatens food security as well as unique biological resources. Yet few models exist to identify the underlying socioeconomic causes of dryland destruction or the appropriate interventions to successfully manage these fragile arid lands.

NHI has worked with government leaders, community organizations, and academic experts to design a user-friendly, spatially-oriented data management system. This tool enables policy makers to intervene before crises emerge in biodiversity and human privation, with their attendant problems of refugees and migration. We have undertaken pilot programs in environmental and socioeconomic “hot spots” in Mexico, Chile, and Brazil.
